What is a red tent and why do we need it?

The Red Tent is best explained by Anita Diamant herself in her brilliant novel of the same name, the Red Tent. She takes us into the ancient menstrual hut and shows us through vivid imagery how women became echad during their moontime. In recent years, many red tent movements have begun to spring up from nowhere. Practical limitations prevent a monthly gathering but through virtual and real gatherings we can enjoy the sanctity of the red tents of old.

In the red tent, women on their menstrual thrones are held in high regard. I share the belief and experience of heightened spiritual awareness during the moontime. It is the time we teach young women, share of our own trials and wisdoms and provide healing for those who are facing life battles. As their blood flows, so wisdom and all things feminine flow freely and naturally.

The Red Tent is representative of the womb and as such it speaks of the feminine, of fertility and birth, of death and grieving, of the changing nature of women, of our cycles and our seasons.  Without the blood of our womb, the potential for life ceases.  Without the nurturing of a red tent community, the potential for women to access the depth of their power, wisdom and beauty ceases.  They are still powerful, wise and beautiful but is lacks the magic and wonder of the womb.

Women are yearning for the magic and red tents are finding their way back into commnunities.  The earth is calling for the feminine with a deep cry.  Reviving these sanctuaries is a response to hearing that call.

Let us raise the red tent - for such a time as this!!!!
